Credit Freezes and Credit Checks by Country
Understand free US credit freezes, how to review credit records in Colombia, and what Brazil's Registrato can show when you are concerned about identity misuse.
A US freeze restricts credit file access
In the United States, a credit freeze restricts access to your credit file, which can make many unauthorized new credit applications harder to complete. Freezes are free at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You need to contact each bureau separately. A freeze does not close existing accounts or prevent every form of identity theft.
Manage the freeze when you apply
If you apply for credit, you may need to lift a freeze temporarily. Ask the lender which bureau it plans to check, then use that bureau's official process. Keep your account access secure so you can manage the freeze when needed. Continue reviewing statements, since a freeze does not stop misuse of an existing account.
Colombia: review and dispute credit information
In Colombia, review your records through DataCrédito and TransUnion's official channels. Look for unfamiliar obligations, inquiries, and incorrect identifying information. Ask each bureau about its current alert or security options rather than assuming they work like a US freeze. Dispute inaccurate information with the reporting organization and bureau, and retain the written responses.
Brazil: use Registrato as a review tool
Banco Central's Registrato can help you review certain banking relationships and credit information in Brazil. It is not the same as a US credit freeze. Read each report's scope and update timing before drawing conclusions. If something is unfamiliar, contact the institution directly. Ask about current controls and follow the appropriate dispute process.
