Identity Theft in Colombia
Learn how cédula impersonation can lead to loans or mobile lines in Colombia, and how to document concerns, check credit records, and report suspected fraud.
A cédula can be used for impersonation
In Colombia, identity misuse may involve a cédula number, a copied document, or other personal details. Someone may try to obtain credit or activate a mobile line in another person's name. A document copy alone does not prove that fraud occurred. Unexpected contracts, bills, or verification messages deserve careful follow-up with the provider.
Check loans and mobile services directly
If a lender or mobile operator contacts you about an unfamiliar obligation, ask for the application and supporting records. State clearly that you did not authorize the service. Use contact information obtained independently. Keep complaint numbers and written replies. Do not pay an unfamiliar debt simply because a caller pressures you to act.
Review credit information and seek corrections
Check your information with DataCrédito and TransUnion using their official channels. Look for unfamiliar obligations, inquiries, or incorrect personal details. Dispute errors with the reporting company and the relevant bureau. The Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio, known as the SIC, provides guidance on personal data rights and complaints within its authority.
Report the suspected crime
Report suspected impersonation to the Fiscalía through an available official channel. Police CAI Virtual can provide guidance for incidents involving digital channels and direct you toward appropriate reporting routes. Confirm which process applies to your case. Preserve messages, contracts, screenshots, and transaction records. A criminal report does not automatically correct a lender's records.
