Pix Scams in Brazil: Common Warning Signs
Learn how Pix scams use impersonation, false payment claims, and urgent requests, plus practical checks and reporting steps for suspicious transfers in Brazil.
Fast payments still require careful checks
Pix is Brazil's instant payment system. Criminals may exploit the speed of transfers by pressuring someone to send money before checking the story. Common approaches include impersonating relatives, sellers, or bank staff. Before confirming a transfer, review the recipient information shown by your bank and independently verify any unexpected or urgent request.
A receipt image is not proof of payment
A seller may receive a screenshot claiming that a Pix payment was completed. Images can be altered, and a scheduled transfer is not the same as a completed payment. Check your own account through the official banking app. Do not release goods or return a supposed overpayment based only on a message or receipt image.
Handle mistaken-payment claims through your bank
If someone says they sent you Pix by mistake, verify the transaction in your account. Do not send a separate transfer to a different key just because a stranger asks. Contact your bank and use its official return process when appropriate. Avoid sharing account access or approving unrelated requests while trying to resolve the situation.
Report suspected fraud without delay
Contact your bank immediately after a suspected fraudulent Pix transfer. Ask whether the Mecanismo Especial de Devolução, known as MED, applies to your case. Its rules and deadlines matter, and recovery is not guaranteed. Preserve transaction details and messages, and file a boletim de ocorrência when appropriate. MED is not a general solution for ordinary purchase disputes.
