How to Reduce Shoulder Surfing on iPhone

Reduce shoulder surfing on iPhone by shielding passcodes, limiting visible details, using biometrics wisely, and responding if someone sees your code.

Notice who can see your screen

Shoulder surfing means observing someone else's screen or input to learn sensitive information. It can happen in a queue, on transit, at a cafe, or through a nearby camera. Before opening a document or entering a passcode, check your surroundings. Move your phone closer, turn away from nearby viewers, or wait for a more private moment when the task is not urgent.

Enter passcodes less visibly

Use Face ID or Touch ID when practical to reduce public passcode entry. When your iPhone requires the code, shield the screen with your hand and avoid typing where someone has a clear view. Do not tell the code to a stranger offering help. A privacy screen protector may reduce some side viewing, but it does not block every viewing angle or protect against cameras.

Limit exposed content

Set notification previews to When Unlocked or Never for sensitive apps, depending on your needs. Review what your iPhone allows while locked, and shorten Auto-Lock if practical. Open only the document needed for the current task. Avoid leaving identity records visible while you talk or step away. Enable Stolen Device Protection where supported, but treat it as an added safeguard rather than a replacement for discretion.

Act if a code was observed

Change your device passcode promptly in a private place if you think someone learned it. Review whether that code was reused for any app or other purpose, and replace those reused secrets too. If the phone is missing, use Find My and mark it as lost. Do not hand an unlocked phone to an unknown person to complete a sensitive task on your behalf.
