What to Do If Your iPhone Is Stolen

Respond to a stolen iPhone with Find My, protect your accounts and mobile service, avoid recovery scams, and understand when remote erasure may help.

Mark the iPhone as lost

Use Find My on another trusted Apple device or visit iCloud.com/find by typing the address yourself. Select the missing iPhone and mark it as lost. Follow the prompts to lock it and display a safe contact number if appropriate. Find My must have been enabled beforehand. If a location appears, do not confront a suspected thief. Give relevant information to local law enforcement.

Protect your number and accounts

Contact your mobile carrier to suspend the stolen phone's service and discuss protecting your number against unauthorized transfers. If someone may know your device passcode, prioritize your Apple Account, primary email, financial accounts, and password manager. Review trusted devices, sessions, and recovery information from a safe device. Tell your bank if you see suspicious activity or believe payment information has been exposed.

Consider remote erasure carefully

Remote erasure can protect data that remains on the device, but it is a serious step. Read Apple's current guidance and the confirmation screens before proceeding. If the phone is offline, the request may wait until it reconnects. Do not remove the stolen iPhone from Find My, since doing so removes Activation Lock and makes it easier for someone else to use or resell.

Watch for follow-up scams

Thieves may send messages claiming that your phone was found and asking you to sign in or remove it from your account. Never share your passcode, account password, or verification codes. Use Find My directly rather than links in messages. For future protection, enable Stolen Device Protection where supported, keep backups current, and store recovery information somewhere other than the phone.
